Women and their families can access any of the agency's services free of charge. The Calgary Women's

Emergency Shelter (CWES) has been part of the community since 1974. CWES started as part of a grassroots

movement to assist abused women.

Over the years the mandate of CWES has expanded and it is now a full domestic violence service agency with

programs that address crisis treatment, intervention and prevention of domestic violence.

The YWCA Sheriff King Home is a 38-bed/21-day stay emergency shelter for women and children fleeing

domestic violence. They provide shelter, food, individual & group counselling, follow-up services and referrals

at no cost to clients.

Each client is assessed to determine the appropriateness of the shelter as a temporary home--with safety

of both the prospective family and the other families already in the shelter as a key-determining factor.

After the initial assessment and intake, our main focus is to provide the essentials: safety, food & support.

They also address confidentiality, Danger & Risk Assessment, safety planning for the whole family, and focus

on basic trauma work.

The immediate goal of the shelter services is to move the family out of the crisis state to feel safer and calmer.

Discovery House is a non-profit organization that concentrates on the prevention of family violence in Calgary and area.    Our unique role in the scope of violence prevention is providing families with long term emotional, economic, and practical support when leaving a violent home or situation.

Discovery House was created in 1980 under the name of the Calgary Family Support Society. It was created to provide families who had experienced repeated violence a safe place to recover for an extended period of time. Discovery House reconfigured an existing apartment building, provided furnished suites at a subsidized rental rate, and began hosting families for up to six months. Twenty five years later, these core services continue to be provided. Along with safe and secure housing, families also receive free individual and group counseling.

Lurana Shelter opened its doors in November 1993 as a program of the Franciscan Sisters Benevolent Society. Due to the expansion of services over the years, the Board of Directors of the Franciscan Sisters Benevolent Society decided to create Lurana Shelter Society. In 2007, the Lurana Shelter program was transferred in its entirety and Lurana Shelter Society became its own Canadian Registered Charity. (859626384RR0001)

The Society and Shelter are named after the foundress of the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement. The Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement have been providing services in Edmonton, Alberta since 1928.
